For my performance piece, I decided running in place would be the most conceptual. I am wearing “nice clothes” because the piece overall is a visual statement about the mindless monotony of the blue collar worker. The blue collar worker that keeps performing the same action with no progress. They can sometimes spend their whole life working mindlessly towards something because they’re forced to to make a living. The camera motion symbolizes how the world keeps spinning around him, but nothing of importance is taking place. The setting of the shoot was to show how he is so preoccupied with his mindless, useless task that he is oblivious to both beauty of the natural world and man-made beauty. He only focuses on the task at hand with no regard for the outside world. The song was added for a couple reasons. First, it gave rhythm to the piece and gave a visual connection between the sound of the guitar being picked and me moving up and down making it more interesting. The tone of the song also matches the message of the piece. It sounds hopeful yet hopeless a the same time, which is the mood I wanted to capture.
I really liked the idea and the visual concept of this project. However after reviewing the footage I was really unhappy with the quality of the image. The picture starts out well exposed and the colors are balanced, but as the camera rotates around me the exposure and colors get severely thrown off. I think if the friend of mine that held the camera would have clicked on me to refocus and re-expose the image, then the colors might have been fixed. Either way I am very unhappy with this aspect of the footage and I did not have time to reshoot. I think I will end up redoing the video as a personal project. Like I said, I really like the concept and idea I have going here, but due to the poor quality of iPhone videos it did not come out the way I wanted it to.
