4 Artist’s Statement
The
functions of the brain are very complex and have proven to be very impressive. For
Project 4’s performance I chose to explore the way in which our brains are
capable of accomplishing one task while simultaneously processing another. I
chose to focus on myself as the subject of the performance in order to solely
interpret the abilities of my brain. I chose to exhibit this by recording my
usual walk to class. I chose to cut myself out of the footage, as I wanted the
audience to witness what I was watching from an observational perspective.
During the journey I made note of thoughts and observations that I later
recorded as a continuous monologue. I then layered the voice recording over the
footage to mimic the actual walk. I found the thoughts and observations to be
interesting because during the entire journey, not once did I think about how
to get where I was going. My brain was able to take me to my destination without
actually having to think about where to go, it simply remembered. And while it
was leading me to class, it was able to process and think about other things
simultaneously. In terms of anatomy, the parietal lobe controls spatial
reasoning and navigation while the temporal lobe plays a part in facial and
scene recognition as well as thought processing. This performance allowed me to
see the working relationship between these two lobes and how they actually work
together. I find the abilities of the brain to be fascinating as it performs so
many functions, often at the same time, and it allows for seamless thinking.
