Driving
is integral to my experience here at UF. As an out of state student, I have a
commute of 6 hours to and from school.
For project 3 I chose to create a car scape reflective of the sounds I
hear during my commute. I chose to string the sounds together in the manor of
an actual car ride therefore creating a more realistic experience. I wanted to focus
on the monotony of the journey as driving long distances can leave one feeling
tired and often anxious to arrive at the desired destination. To emphasize this
monotony I chose to repeat some of the smaller sound bits and then layer the
rhythmic droning of the larger sounds underneath them. I also included recordings of myself that also
give an insight to my specific journey as I can become increasingly impatient
with fellow drivers and verbally communicate this impatience. These expressions
also serve as a means of keeping myself awake as the simple, and often
repetitive, scenery can also contribute to the monotony of the trip. Overall I
hoped to convey a condensed version of the trip in a way that is recognizable
and familiar to the listener, yet recognizable enough to bring about the
feelings associated with driving long distances.
