Project 3

Natural Enemy
Humans monopolize and gain revenue from taking elements of nature and putting a price tag on them. Even recreating these “natural environments” for home owner’s backyards and large centralized spaces in cities and town such as, hospitals and downtown squares. Starting off as the recreation of what can be seen and replicated to now taking sounds of natural environments and placing them into unnatural “man-made” homes and buildings. Now instead of walking outside to hear the rain or even traveling to the beach for some relaxation the average day human has the capabilities to experience these sounds inside the comforts of their home.

“Natural Enemy” is a 3 minute sound clip of different natural recordings and a comment on one of the unnatural methods we can now use to hear them; the soothing clock. This clock monopolizes on the sounds of nature and it meant to lull the user to sleep. By taking the simulated sound environment of the outdoors and not using primarily the “attractive” sounds that nature produces but also combining them with the “unattractive” sounds, such as a sea gull laughing; the irony in our manipulation is brought forth. By continuing the sound of the individual sleeping in the background it shows our ignorance and comfort we find in manipulating what is natural in order to create something that is not.
