Causality is the chain of events that make up a story. The first event causes the second, which causes the third, and so on. Causality is basically just cause-and-effect.

The non-narrative approach is the idea of breaking away from sequence for artistic purpose/meaning. This allows the responses to be more open-ended. There's three kinds of non-narratives. The first is categorical which involves the exploration of a single concept or action. The second, rhetorical, uses sequential images to make an argument for something. The third type of non-narrative approach is abstraction which involves color, shape, texture, and movement alterations to provide all of the information necessary for a compelling piece. Two non-narrative approaches that come to mind are Film Socialisme by Jean-Luc Godard and Tales of the Forgotten Future by Lewis Klahr.
