Listen
The silent nature of the task at
hand provided an essential advantage for the video piece. The lack of sound or
audio suggests the subject’s inability to communicate through language.
Disconnection between the viewer, the subject’s intended listener, are depicted
through shot cuts from her portrait to shot cuts focused on her existentialism.
It is imperative that disconnection addresses the subject’s current view of her
distant relationship to others. It is an issue present before and after the
time of the video piece. Shots were focused solely on the subject with minimal
interest in her environment due to specific interests in her behavior in
silence.
The subject’s attempts to gain a
sliver of acknowledge from an outside entity are futile when even the subject
cannot hear herself. Instead, the silence pushes the subject adrift to an
existential state of being. The subject expresses deep concern for their
existence through personal “silent” dialogue. The shots are close and intimate
with repeated focus on the subject’s portrait, eyes, and lips. These are
instances in which the subject is aware of the viewer’s presence and
conversation follows. In the last shots, however, there is an indication that
the subject has reached to the conclusion that her dialogue is lost in silence.
These frames depict her with her eyes close to disconnect the viewer and center
her thoughts to herself. Thus the last shot of the subject’s lips with few
words mouthed is directed to herself rather than any entity potentially present.
Continuation of sequences broken apart
that are shown later repeatedly stresses the degree that the subject is lost
for words for herself and others. Just
merely listening is not sufficient in any context. To answer the silence is to
truly affirm the subject’s existence.
