Chapter 14 Reflection

Causality refers to the notion that all happenings stem from a cause and the consequent relationship between the cause factor and the resulting effect.
Narrative compression involves an artist, director or author’s strategic manipulation of the behavior, environment and perception of a given interval of time in order to exaggerate the rate at which the time is passing. In order to condense movement and change an artist can choose to portray elements that aid this quickening tempo.

An example of narrative compression can be found in the commercial Clash of Clans: Revenge.
In the clip time seems to move slowly for the man holding his phone. It is not until he is interrupted by the barista that he is forced to snap out of his time vacuum and re enter the world of fast-paced time.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GC2qk2X3fKA

The butterfly effect, a film directed by Eric Bress, explores the sensitivity of causality and portrays multiple realities based on interrupting and changing the consequence of events. The main character’s life is depicted in a non-linear nature as to show the ramifications of subtle actions. Another example of a nonlinear plot is found in the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind directed by Michel Gondry. The order of events throughout the movie is unclear at first because the movie unfolds along with the memory of the characters, which have been manipulated due to the events within the movie. The audience is shown a timeline after experiencing the unfolding of time through a psychological landscape.
