Project 2 Artist Statement
The second project done for Time Based Media is untitled. The idea behind the short film is to show people how much water they use and how often they use water on a daily basis, highlighting just the water used in the sink of their bathroom. I chose to have a faceless character as the protagonist because it is not important who this person is as she represents the general population of people that overuse water without really even knowing it. The real protagonist is the water itself. Secondly I decided to have jump cuts through the water in the sink rising and falling so the viewer can physically see just how much water is being flushed down the drain unnecessarily, and to also show the passage of time through jump cuts.
I then repeated the same clips seen in the beginning but used jump cuts to make them go by faster. The purpose was to further create the passage of time in a small space, with the repeated clips it creates the effect of these actions happening over an over again. Towards the end of the video, I used different shots of the sink being turned on which I then gradually sped up to give the effect that the sink is being turned on hundreds and hundreds of times. I wanted to conclude the video with a shot of the in focus sink right next to the out of focus tooth brush to give a very strong visual that you NEED water in order to brush your teeth and do daily things that people take for granted.
