For my video, I wanted to explore
how adults regress back to childhood tendencies, but still maintain adult
themes. I showed to young adults building a blanket fort and then shot the activities
they did inside of the tent. All of the actions, however, still incorporated elements
alluding to adulthood. For example, the board games used real money. Even the
idea of tent varies from a fun hide-out to an intimate, romantic setting. The
cross referencing of objects creates playful balance that I used throughout the
film. They are drinking beers, but using colorful, twisty straws to enhance the
silliness of the scene. The video demonstrates the merge of themes between
childhood and adulthood enjoyments that are so often kept separate in
conformity to social expectations.
The first part of the video shows a
speeded time lapse of the two actors building the fort. The rest of the video
splits shots from the interior and exterior of the tent. I wanted to still
maintain a sense of intimacy, so neither of their faces is fully shown, except
for in shadows. The hardest part of filming was controlling the lighting and
keeping certain angle shots steady. Several of the shots are from the view of
the actors, in which I had to hold the camera over them. Throughout the video,
I included shots of a candle that demonstrated the length of time. Overtime, it
slowly starts to melt and mark how much time has gone by. The lighting of the
tent also shows the passing of time. The shadows and artificial lighting become
more evident as the night goes on.
