Rosalyn
I wanted to really think about the confinements of this piece and how I could push those boundaries and create something dynamic in a 6x6 space. Because of this I chose to use a car as my setting. It is a small, confined, almost constricting space yet it allows for freedom and mobility. A car is one's access to the world, a transport from point A to point B. Because of this, the passage of time in one's vehicle is very easily seen.
A car often has a personality. It is your home away from home, your little safe haven. You play your music, you do your make up, you pick your nose. Though they have windows on all sides, we feel like our cars are impenetrable bubbles containing bits of us that we don't always want to share. Because of this, I decided to encapsulate the essence of someone's car that had a lot of character. Rosalyn is an old girl with lots of memories built into her. She has bumper stickers all along her rear window, a collection of objects litters her floor, there's random velcro strips stuck on random parts of the exterior and a totemical necklace hangs off her rearview mirror. She is one of a kind, unique to Travis and his tastes. With this project, I sought to capture the little things that make her special whilst still conveying a sense of time.
