This
piece explores the monotony of everyday life and the frequency in which we have
to complete certain activities. The inspiration for this piece came during my
extensive nighttime routine when I pondered why, although obviously necessary,
I had to do this routine every night. Consider how many times in your life you
will brush your teeth before going to bed, because it is a necessity. Or think
about how many days for the rest of your life you will need to wake up with
your 7 am alarm for work.
The
6x6 foot area for this piece aids in telling the story of monotony. The space
is enclosed in a white environment, with bland colored food, with bland looking
people. There is nowhere for the viewer to focus except the activity being
depicted in the video. After watching the same activity for about 3 minutes,
the viewer already begins to feel bored. When life is reduced down to only the
tasks, without the variation included, the viewer realizes just how boring a life
that follows a strict routine is.
