Artist's Statement
For project one we were to focus on
the idea of the elusive. The idea of elusiveness can be applied to several
aspects of life. While constructing a topic with the idea of “the elusive” in
mind, I chose to focus my stop motion on the action of cooking mashed potatoes.
The story is seen from the perspective of a potato spud who’s journey can be
seen through his confused, and often frightened facial expressions and the
actions inflicted upon him. The story serves as a commentary on the ignorance
of people in the face of consumerism. As the economy has rapidly grown, the
consumerist attitudes of people have also grown. Consumerism has made society
demanding and superficial in the sense that people want what they want and do
not put much thought into the processes that occur in order to feed their
wants. By showing this ignorance through the not-so-serious and cutesy demeanor
of a potato and his dark journey, I aim to call attention to the fact that
there is a deeper and darker story behind consumerism. Choices for dimmer lighting and more muted colors also tie into this darker backstory. This in turn plays into
the idea of “the elusive,” as it is difficult to achieve the proper awareness
that comes with consumerism. Overall I hope to convey the idea that people have
become ignorant to the actions that occur behind the scenes to feed their
consumerist needs.
